About John Lobosco

The accumulation of experiences, elusive memories of places and relationships, and reading world news leave impressions that I try to unlock in my work. Also a musician, I look at each work as an improvisation without naming the work, allowing you, the viewer, to see it your way. Have you ever asked a jazz musician what is the name of your improvisation? or what is the meaning of your improvisation?  Well, that's where I am coming from. Later I might title a group of works as a series. But don't take the titles too literally, since the words emerge associatively and sometimes randomly through conversations with viewers. Visual art is not just about the thoughts or actions of the maker, but also the thoughts of the viewer. A lot of my work that is all or partly a printmaking process tends to have a painterly (not dry and or mechanical) quality, since it is the painting process that lends itself to a tactile experience that allows me to build the image - feeling my way through it.

Having studied art (Mass College of Art and Boston University) and lived on the east coast for good part of my life, I've exhibited my work extensively in the Boston and New England areas. One of the most memorable art experiences was when I was selected to a residency in Montauk, New York by the Andy Warhol Foundation. I was left alone - really alone - on a beach to make my work. I did not paint "scenes" as one might expect. I looked and listened to the marks left by those that came before me (people and other forms of nature) and made from there.

I have worked with students of all ages teaching art (and music) - painting, drawing, printmaking, set design/construction as well as mural painting.

Visual Things Here are some photos I've taken that I find visually interesting. Usually they relate to my art after I've made the art. They are constant reminders of how the so called real and natural world is abstract and mysterious.
